Petroleum engineering is a branch of engineering concerning the design and development of methods for extracting oil and gas from deposits below the earth’s surface. Petroleum engineers are involved in nearly all stages of oil and gas field evaluation, development and production, and their skills encompass engineering disciplines such as geology, chemical, mechanical and civil engineering.

Petroleum engineers may have the opportunity to work with other professionals, such as geologists to understand the geologic formation of the rock containing the reservoir; drilling operators to determine the best drilling methods for extracting oil and gas; or with reservoir engineers to interpret well-logging results and predict production potential.

Reservoir engineering

A reservoir engineer is involved in tasks related to well placement, oil recovery, and production levels.

Production engineering

Production engineers are responsible for managing the interface between the reservoir and the well, and also for selecting the surface equipment that separates the produced fluids.

Drilling engineering

The drilling engineering discipline involves managing the technical aspects of drilling the production and injection wells. A drilling engineer may also decide which safety and casing equipment to use and decide on the direction of the operations.

Petroleum geology

Petroleum geologists analyse subsurface structures using geological and geophysical methods to find hydrocarbons.
