Qatar Oil and Gas jobs

Qatar is a small peninsula extending from Saudi Arabia into the Persian Gulf. Since the discovery of oil in the Dukhan field in the late 1930s, oil & gas has become one of Qatar’s major industries accounting for 60% of GDP. The country has been a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) since 1961.

The upstream and downstream oil and gas sectors in Qatar are controlled by Qatar Petroleum, who are responsible for activities such as exploration, production, storage, transport, marketing, and sale of crude. Qatar Petroleum also authorise international oil & gas companies to carry out petroleum operations in the country through the use of production sharing agreements.

Oil production in Qatar

Liquid products commonly produced in Qatar include crude oil, natural gas liquids, and condensate. The majority of Qatar’s oil production comes from three fields: Al Shaheen, Dukhan, and Idd El Shargi, which are operated by Maersk, Qatar Petroleum and Occidental respectively. They account for more than 85% of the country’s crude oil production capacity.

There are two refineries in Qatar, the Laffan refinery, and Al Shaheen refinery, and three export terminals located in Umm Said, Ras Laffan, and Halul Island.

Natural gas production in Qatar

Qatar is the world’s largest exporter of LNG and has the third largest proven reserves at 885 tcf behind Russia and Iran respectively. Qatar meets all of its internal natural gas demand through domestic sources, with the electricity and water desalination sectors accounting for most of the country’s natural gas consumption.

The majority of Qatar’s gas is exported to markets in Asia and a small amount of natural gas is sent via the Dolphin Pipeline to the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Qatar is also a global leader in gas-to-liquids (GTL) technologies, which involves turning dry natural gas into liquid fuels such as naphtha and low-sulfur diesel. There are two operational GTL facilities in Qatar, the Oryx GTL plant and Pearl GTL plant.
