Healthcare informatics (also know as healthcare IT, health informatics, HIS or Health Information Systems, HIT and more) is a specialized
area of information technology that combines aspects of several job disciplines including information science and technology, computer
information systems, computer science, and clinical healthcare.
By basic definition, it covers all aspects of data gathering, storage and retrieval, use of information within the healthcare realm. Often, healthcare IT professionals also have a clinical background, as the data involved in healthcare informatics includes professional medical language, insurance/billing codes, pharmacuetical terminology, and demands knowledge of regulatory requirements, along with standard IT knowledge. Healthcare informatics has become an industry unto itself, although, with specialized training, IT professionals outside of informatics can quickly become viable candidates for healthcare informatics jobs; a field experiencing a major shortage of qualified talent.
