A Talascend client is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer for a contract position based in Houston, TX.
Structural Engineer
Summary:
This position is responsible for planning and conducting independent work in the CSA Engineering discipline, requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
A. Supervision Received
- Works independently on most assignments with minimal supervision.
- Receives technical guidance on complex or unique problems and approval on proposed project plans from supervisors or specialists.
- Provides technical direction and task assignments to subordinate engineers, designers, drafters, and technicians.
- Communicates directly with vendors and field personnel for project coordination.
- Interfaces with client counterparts as directed.
- Plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates engineering work phases related to civil site development.
- Utilizes company and industry-standard 2D/3D CADD tools.
- Prepares technical specifications, evaluates subcontractor bids, and recommends awards.
- Coordinates CSA engineering work across disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
- May serve as a technical lead for specific project tasks.
- Provides on-the-job training and performance input for team members.
- Drafts correspondence to vendors and clients.
- Reviews deliverables and technical documentation from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Assists with conceptual design studies, proposals, and reports.
- Performs or supports problem analysis and original design tasks.
- Assists with or prepares cost estimates, take-offs, and staffing projections.
- Reviews and checks work performed by junior engineers.
- Promotes a positive work environment focused on communication, teamwork, and innovation.
Job Knowledge & Skills Required:
- Expertise in civil engineering techniques, system design, and calculations.
- Demonstrated experience with civil site development design deliverables (e.g., site layout, drainage, grading, pavements, utilities, soil retention).
- Understanding of plant constructability and construction methods.
- Proficiency in engineering software such as:
- Bentley MicroStation, InRoads
- CulvertMaster, FlowMaster, CivilStorm
- Intergraph Smart3D (or similar tools)
- Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (AASHTO, ACI, ASTM, PCA, Asphalt Institute).
- Strong communication skills (oral and written).
- Familiarity with SmartPlant 3D is a plus.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant project experience.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license from a recognized board (Preferred but not required)
- Demonstrated experience in design engineering or equivalent field.
