Nuclear Maintenance Equipment Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking a Nuclear Maintenance Equipment Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Everette, Washington (State).
Overview
The role involves designing and delivering nuclear maintenance casks and their support equipment for a reactor, working within the Fuel Handling group alongside other systems design groups.
Responsibilities
- Design of nuclear maintenance equipment systems from requirements through final design, with a focus on operational aspects of the systems
- Create operational narratives for nuclear maintenance equipment and systems
- Create diagrams for equipment and systems
- Support the development of automated control systems and equipment
- Provide system design and operational input to and perform reviews of analyses, such as thermal, seismic, structural, heat transfer, and other analyses performed by others
- Identify and ensure effective application of correct design codes into the design of plant systems such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc.
- Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers in applicable nuclear related design and operations standards
- Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system design
- Work with the vendor design team to create and manage drawing packages of system designs, including but not limited to Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D models, and system interface drawings
- Oversee fabrication and delivery activities for maintenance equipment such as casks, floor valves, adapters, and support equipment
- Interface with design disciplines (such as mechanical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and nuclear) to identify and develop plant design information and specify system design and performance criteria
- Work with the vendor team and interface with internal design stakeholders in establishing and maintaining system requirements and specification documents
- Recommend testing programs for plant system qualification, as needed
- Generate documents as a part of the design packages for systems, sub-systems, and equipment designs
- Develop (and review vendor) technical design documents, such as Design Descriptions, Interface Control Documents, Engineering Design Specifications, etc.
- Interface with and support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports
- Support design reviews as plant system and subsystem designs are established
Qualifications
- B.S. in Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university
- 6+ years work experience with proven mechanical system design and operations skills
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in the design and operation of complex mechanical systems, structures and equipment, particularly nuclear fuel handling systems
- Previous experience with nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel handling or nuclear maintenance process systems, or similar high-performance system or equipment design is required
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
- Current or previously qualified nuclear plant operator (EOOW, SRO, STE, or similar) is highly desired
- Experience with radiological controls at nuclear power plants is highly desired
- Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence
- Candidate must be a self-starter and possess ability to contribute to a design team’s effort with minimal direction
- Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives
- Ability to work on simultaneous tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach
- Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001
- The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork
