Talascend is currently seeking a Metal Fitter for a direct hire opportunity with our client in Haltom City, Texas.
Overview
The Metal Fitter performs layout, fabrication, fitting, and joining of metal and other weldable materials for tubular steel structures, ensuring that all products meet specifications and quality standards. The role involves working directly from blueprints to produce precise and UT-passable welds.
Responsibilities
- Perform fitting, joining, fabricating, and repairing of metal and weldable materials according to blueprint specifications, ensuring fit-ups are consistent with UT-passable welds.
- Set up work using jigs/fixtures or hand layouts to fabricate parts and rework finished products.
- Locate long seams, number pole shafts, check twist and camber against acceptance criteria, and prepare them for further assembly.
- Trim pole shafts, find true centers, and mark guidelines for accurate assembly.
- Lay out and fit base plates, flange plates, vangs, brackets, through plates, ground sleeves, and attached parts.
- Fabricate multi-component parts and verify conformance using tape measures, squares, levels, and templates.
- Operate overhead and jib cranes, hoists, slings, grinders, cutting torches, and hand/power tools safely.
- Maintain equipment functionality and notify management or maintenance of repairs needed.
- Cross-train and perform additional tasks as required and manage time efficiently to meet production standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area following 5S principles.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read a tape measure to 1/16 inch and perform shop math (fractions, decimals, basic geometry).
- Ability to pass the company's New-Hire Fitter Assessment (including tape measure & shop math, blueprint & weld symbols, practical fit-up).
- Ability to work 2nd shift and overtime as needed with reliable attendance.
- Ability to work in a shop environment with seasonal temperature extremes.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with tapered tubular poles, transmission/substation structures, or heavy structural fabrication.
- Knowledge of welding equipment such as torches and torch tips.
- Forklift experience is a plus.
- Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to work well within a team.
- Successfully pass background check, drug screen, physical, audiogram, and vision test.
