Riyadh infrastructure

In half a century, the city of Riyadh made its constructional renaissance turning it from a small town to a modern city with a metropolitan area of 1800 square kilometers. It is now undergoing constructional development with improvements being made to road and transport infrastructure.

There is a need for improved transport infrastructure to cope with increasing traffic volumes. Riyadh’s current population is 5.7 million and is expected to increase to 8.3 million by 2030.

Riyadh metro

The Riyadh metro forms part of the Riyadh Public Transport Project along with a new bus network, and park and ride services. The Riyadh metro, is one of the world’s largest transport infrastructure projects. Construction is planned to commence in 2014 and is scheduled to take 4 years to complete at a cost of $22.5 billion. The end result of this project will be a metro system that comprises of six separate lines (Blue, Green, Red, Orange, Yellow, and Purple) with a length totaling around 176km. The Riyadh metro project is expected to employ over 30,000 workers during construction.

Riyadh road network

As the urban area in Riyadh has spread out from its original centre, the existing road network is becoming unable to cope with the volume of traffic, leading to congestion at busy periods. To address the problems caused by the current road system, there are plans for the building of bridges and tunnels, upgrading of existing roads, as well as construction of new roads. The aim of this project is to cut congestion, reduce journey times and improve safety for all road users.
