Talascend is currently seeking an experienced Nuclear Shielding and Criticality Engineer for a long-term contract career opportunity, 100% remote.

Candidates may reside anywhere in the USA; but must be eligible to work for any employer without sponsorship now, or in the future.

OVERVIEW:
Our client is developing a Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR). The reactor leverages fast neutron spectrum to minimize the reactivity impact of fission products and avoid the need for online reprocessing that is required in thermal spectrum molten salt reactor concepts.  The Nuclear Shielding & Criticality Engineer will use the latest in MCNP to perform radiation shielding calculations for both gammas and neutrons.  You bring experience in criticality calculations and safety to this team as well.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform radiation shielding design and analysis for advanced nuclear reactors, including calculating dose rates, activation rates, neutron fluence rates, and energy deposition rates.
  • Develop radiation sources based on material activation analysis for non-fuel in-vessel components.
  • Perform criticality calculations and develop upper subcritical limits (USLs).
  • Establish and maintain formal documentation of analysis results.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering from an accredited university. Advanced degree is preferred.
  • 5+ years of nuclear analysis methods related experience in MCNP, criticality safety and combined experience with performing radiation shielding calculations for both gammas and neutrons are required.
  • Must be familiar with variance reduction using MCNP, and features such as surface source read/write, mesh tallies, and weight windows.  Familiarity with ADVANTG for weight windows generation is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal and communication skills required.  As you will be working within published regulatory guidelines and following requirements for documenting calculations.
  • Experience working under NQA-1 quality program desired

PREFERRED:
  • Experience with radiation shielding software such as Attila, ADVANTG, Serpent, MAVRIC, MicroShield,  SCALE, OpenMC, Whisper, PARTISN, etc.
  • Experience with CAD tool such as SolidWorks, SpaceClaim/ANSYS, or Cubit.
  • Good working knowledge of nuclear and/or general numerical methods (e.g., activation analysis, dose rates, PDEs, dynamics, deterministic and stochastic particle transport, isotopic depletion, nuclear data, etc.).
  • Fast reactor experience preferred.
  • Strong programming skills in any language is a plus, but ideally Python, Git, C++, and Fortran skills.
  • An ability to perform professional-quality software development for nuclear applications is preferred.

We thank all applicants for their interest. However, only those qualified individuals who closely meet the qualifications of the position will be contacted. The details of the position are only a summary, other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Background Check and Drug Screen may be required.
