Talascend is currently seeking a Materials Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Bellevue, Washington (State).

Overview

The role involves developing material property correlations and advanced material performance models of complex materials phenomena based on data from literature and testing programs, contributing to the design and licensing of sodium-cooled fast reactors.

Responsibilities

  • Compile datasets from literature for basic physical and mechanical properties, complex mechanical phenomena (e.g. creep, fatigue, creep-fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, and fracture), irradiation performance, corrosion, and tribology
  • Perform qualification of existing data per ASME NQA-1-2015
  • Develop material property correlations and advanced material performance models as input to computer codes and methods to demonstrate the performance of reactor systems, structures, and components
  • Plan, execute, and oversee test programs designed to address data gaps
  • Perform quantitative and statistical analysis on test data and generate technical reports to document new knowledge related to reactor design and qualifications
  • Update and maintain a Python-based material database as well as associated design handbooks for Natrium

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of related experience
  • Master’s degree

Requirements

  • A solid understanding of metallurgy including fabrication and thermomechanical processing of ferrous (e.g., ferritic-martensitic steels) and nonferrous (e.g., nickel-base) alloys is required
  • A general understanding of the design of nuclear reactor and subsequent impacts on materials would be considered a plus
  • Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect, and a desire to foster teamwork
  • Travel required: 5%
