Talascend is currently seeking a Senior Process & Piping Design Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Bellevue, Washington (State).

Overview

This role centers on performing process and piping design, beginning with MCRE design deliverables and evolving toward the design of demonstration reactor systems. You will collaborate with interfacing disciplines and suppliers as part of a high-performing team of engineers and scientists to deliver integrated, executable designs that advance MCFR to its end state as a commercial nuclear power reactor.

Responsibilities

  • Develop system design descriptions, interface control documents, process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) to define system requirements.
  • Design piping layouts, select materials, and perform stress analyses to ensure system integrity using AutoPipe.
  • Prepare and review technical drawings (isometrics, orthographics, general arrangements), specifications, material lists, and vendor documents.
  • Ensure designs adhere to relevant industry codes (ASME B31.1, B31.3), standards (ANSI, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA), and regulatory requirements (DOE, NRC).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (thermal hydraulics, instrumentation & controls, mechanical design, construction contractors) to integrate piping designs into the overall project.
  • Conduct technical reviews of supplier designs, deliverables, and performance.
  • Ensure design quality and compliance through participation in reviews, inspections, audits, and testing.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical or related discipline from an accredited university and 12+ years direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and analysis of industrial mechanical systems, structures, and equipment.
  • Recent experience with piping analysis software (AutoPipe preferred or Caesar).
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Solidworks and AutoCAD preferred).
  • In-depth knowledge of piping components such as valves, fittings, and supports.
  • Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration (highly desired).
  • Previous experience with nuclear reactors, nuclear handling process systems, or similar high-performance system or equipment design (highly desired).
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
  • Candidate must be a self-starter and possess ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
  • Ability to work on simultaneous tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001 (highly desired).
  • Strong communication skills desired.
  • The service provider will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect, and a desire to foster teamwork.
  • Travel required: 0-5%
