Controls Systems Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking a Controls Systems Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Bellevue, Washington (State).
Overview
The Controls Systems Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting instrumentation and control systems for advanced nuclear reactor technologies, ensuring compliance with nuclear codes, standards, and safety requirements. The role involves collaborating with a diverse team of engineers, scientists, and external partners to deliver high-quality engineering solutions for critical safety systems.
Responsibilities
- Interface and support geographically diverse and international design team members to develop supporting design documentation.
- Design I&C systems and sub-systems, providing direction and oversight to team members and suppliers.
- Develop and review system- and component-level specifications and scopes of work.
- Perform engineering and design evaluations in compliance with nuclear codes, standards, licensing requirements, and NRC regulations.
- Specify and analyze instrumentation measurement techniques suitable for sodium fast reactor technologies, including assessment of measurement range, response time, and accuracy.
- Develop and review technical design documents such as System Requirements Documents, Interface Control Documents, and Engineering Design Specifications.
- Create and manage drawing packages including P&IDs, control system architecture diagrams, control logic, and installation drawings.
- Support supplier projects through technical direction, data review, and performance of deliverables.
- Support licensing activities related to Safety Analysis Reports.
- Integrate I&C with other disciplines and interface with licensing teams.
Qualifications
- B.S. or higher in controls, electrical, or related discipline from an accredited university.
- 5-10 years of direct experience in instrumentation and controls systems, including development, diagnostics, and implementation.
- Experience with nuclear reactor safety systems or nuclear instrumentation system design.
- Knowledge of IEEE 379, IEEE 603, IEEE 7-4.3.2, and IEEE 497 desired but not required.
- Familiarity with nuclear quality assurance standards such as 10 CFR 50 Appendix B and ASME NQA-1.
- Ability to handle projects with multiple objectives and resolve conflicts effectively.
- Experience with industrial process flow diagrams (PFD) and P&ID desired but not required.
- Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks) desired but not required.
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence.
- Self-starter capable of coordinating a team with minimal oversight.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks across disciplines.
- Experience with I&C system startup testing procedures desirable but not required.
- High integrity, open communication, respect, teamwork, and alignment with company principles.
- Position level and title will be determined based on qualifications.
- Two or more years of experience in areas such as radiation monitoring, high-temperature sensor design, seismic detection, neutron detectors, setpoint/uncertainty analysis, or post-accident monitoring is desired.
