Thermal Hydraulics Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking an Thermal Hydraulics Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.
Overview
- The role involves developing and validating thermal hydraulic analysis methods to support the design and licensing of advanced reactor systems.
- The engineer will contribute to system transient code development, perform reactor transient analyses, and assist with code benchmarking, verification, and validation activities.
Responsibilities
- Develop system-level thermal hydraulic analysis methods, including modeling strategies and numerical approaches.
- Perform steady-state and transient system-level analyses to characterize model behavior and assess method performance.
- Support method qualification through verification, applicability assessments, and performance characterization.
- Formulate and integrate closure models and empirical correlations into existing analysis frameworks.
- Identify modeling gaps and support method enhancement through sensitivity studies.
- Develop automated workflows and tools for model setup, execution, and post-processing.
- Document modeling methodologies, assumptions, and numerical performance for design and licensing activities.
- Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure effective integration of thermal hydraulic methods within plant design and safety analysis workflows.
- Apply and improve quality assurance practices to ensure traceability and reproducibility of modeling efforts.
Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical Engineering, or similar fields.
- 6+ years of experience in system-level thermal hydraulic modeling and method development for nuclear or energy systems.
- Demonstrated experience in developing or improving analysis methods, including numerical scheme development and stability/accuracy optimization.
- Experience with thermal hydraulic simulation tools such as RELAP5 3D, GOTHIC, SAS, or equivalent.
- Strong foundation in thermal fluids and reactor system behavior, including advanced reactor phenomena.
- Experience conducting sensitivity analyses and identifying modeling gaps.
- Familiarity with scientific programming and workflow automation using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
- Understanding of NQA 1 quality assurance practices for modeling workflows, including documented methodologies and configuration control.
- Strong analytical thinking, technical communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple development efforts simultaneously.
