Talascend is currently seeking a n Weld Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.

Overview

This role supports the engineering efforts of a materials development and qualification team focused on weld processes, supply chain development, and supplier qualification for next-generation material and components for sodium-cooled fast reactors. Responsibilities include weld development activities from laboratory testing to manufacturing process development, utilizing metallurgical principles and weld engineering requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with various project teams to provide welding configuration, geometry, and methods guidance for reactor development programs
  • Develop weld designs, specifications, and processes for reactor design and licensing using fundamental welding engineering principles
  • Inform materials test programs to validate models of material and weld performance, ensuring development efforts meet program objectives
  • Perform scientific analysis of test data (e.g., metallography, non-destructive inspection, mechanical properties, ductility) and generate technical reports
  • Provide materials engineering support for procurement, including leading technical development of suppliers to increase technology readiness levels of key components

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience with a B.S. degree; or 2 years with an M.S. degree; or equivalent experience
  • Degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Welding Engineering, or a related technical discipline is desired
  • Experience with weld engineering for new design
  • Experience in determining geometries, weld methods, and property impacts for welded pipes, pressure vessels, and equipment
  • Working knowledge of ASME NQA-1 and ASME Section IX is highly desirable
  • An understanding of the impact of weld design and parameters on complex mechanical phenomena in high temperature systems
  • A thorough understanding of metallurgy, including welding and heat treatment of ferrous and nonferrous alloys
  • Experience qualifying welds for service in highly regulated applications is preferred
  • Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education
