Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.
Overview
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing reactor core components, structures, and related systems for next-generation nuclear reactors. They will work within a collaborative team environment to develop innovative design solutions that meet industry standards and project requirements.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and utilize inputs from engineering and project teams to produce design solutions, including drawings, models, and specifications.
- Plan and manage design activities to ensure timely completion according to project schedules.
- Develop tests to validate functional and performance requirements of designs.
- Perform scoping analysis and trade studies for various design options.
- Interface with cross-functional teams for design and analysis activities.
- Conduct engineering reviews of team members' products and provide guidance.
- Mentor and direct engineers and subcontractors involved in the project.
- Support continuous learning and promote best practices within the nuclear industry.
Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Mechanical engineering or equivalent (preferred)
- Minimum of five years of equipment/component design experience (relevant M.S. and Doctorate degrees may credit up to two or four years respectively)
- Experience with 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks
- Experience with design of experiments focused on product testing
- Experience in finite element stress analysis, mechanical analysis, and first principles calculations
- Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with creative thinking ability
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks concurrently
- High attention to detail and integrity
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience or familiarity with ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code Section III Division 5
- Design experience in the nuclear industry, particularly with core assemblies
- Knowledge of neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and structural analysis
- Experience with finite element analysis using ANSYS and first principles calculations
- Experience in developing nuclear product test campaigns and writing test requirements documents
- Manufacturing experience, especially in first article production
- Experience evaluating vendors, suppliers, and conducting technical reviews
- Knowledge of nuclear industry regulations, DOE, and NRC standards
