Talascend is currently seeking a Geotechnical Field Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Clay, New York.
Overview
This position involves providing on-site engineering support and supervision for deep foundation and earthwork construction at a large-scale semiconductor manufacturing facility. The role is site-based and requires independent field work, coordinating closely with project teams to ensure quality and safety standards are met.
Responsibilities
- Provide on-site supervisory support during drilled shaft installation socketed into rock, verifying location, plumbness, diameter, and embedment length against drawings and specifications.
- Verify rock socket conditions, including rock type, quality, and cleanliness, and coordinate with engineering for deviations from the design.
- Observe and document reinforcement cage fabrication and placement, as well as concrete pouring activities, including testing and quality checks.
- Support and witness drilled shaft load testing, ensuring calibration, testing, and preliminary review of results.
- Supervise earthwork and ground improvement activities, including excavation, granular fill placement, moisture conditioning, and compaction, in accordance with project standards.
- Review and document field and laboratory test results, coordinate remedial actions, and ensure quality compliance.
- Identify construction issues early and coordinate corrective actions with teams and construction staff.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation such as daily reports, inspection records, and nonconformance reports.
- Support geotechnical investigations, reviews, and development of related engineering designs, specifications, and reports.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited university with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated field experience supporting deep foundation construction and earthwork or ground improvement operations.
- Experience supervising drilled shaft construction, preferably including rock-socketed shafts.
- Knowledge of earthwork, ground improvement, subgrade inspection, proof rolling, and field/testing procedures.
- Ability to interpret geotechnical drawings and specifications and familiarity with soil and rock characterization.
- Proficiency with geotechnical software such as LPILE, APILE, SHAFT, GROUP, SLOPE/W, gINT, Settle3D, and Plaxis, as well as Microsoft Office tools.
- Strong coordination and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a construction environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel to and remain on-site at the Clay, NY project location and other sites as needed.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
- Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration or progress towards PE certification.
- Experience on large industrial, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, energy, or infrastructure projects.
- Previous involvement in drilled shaft or pile load testing programs.
- Hands-on experience with ground improvement techniques such as over-excavation, granular replacement, deep mixing, or stone columns.
- Experience working within established quality assurance and occupational health and safety protocols.
