Mechanical Startup Engineer

Talascend is currently seeking a Mechanical Startup Engineer for a long-term contract opportunity with our client in Brownsville, Texas.

Overview

The mechanical startup engineer is responsible for planning and executing pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, testing, and initial operation of complex process systems. This role requires a hands-on approach with broad multidisciplinary knowledge across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, and operations, ensuring safe and efficient system startup and turnover.

Responsibilities

• Plan and perform pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup activities for complex process systems.
• Directly supervise startup craft activities and develop detailed execution and contingency plans.
• Define temporary testing requirements, prepare complex isolations, and own technical documentation and turnover process.
• Evaluate system changes, deficiencies, or delays and develop mitigation strategies.
• Manage craft personnel performing testing, startup, and operational activities, ensuring safety and compliance.
• Coordinate testing activities, including flushing piping, vessel inspections, equipment run-in, and system logic testing.
• Provide guidance and technical support during all phases of commissioning and startup.
• Ensure all testing and commissioning activities comply with safety standards and project procedures.
• Maintain thorough documentation of testing activities, including test records and data sheets.
• Coordinate with electrical, instrumentation, and control systems disciplines for integrated testing.
• Participate in system turnover walkdowns and resolve punchlist items assigned to their area.
• Monitor spares usage and maintain test equipment and permanent plant materials.
• Oversee subcontractor activities to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.

Qualifications

• University/B.S degree in Mechanical Engineering or 8 years of equivalent industry experience.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in mechanical commissioning or related roles.
• Strong experience with pre-commissioning and commissioning of large rotating equipment, compressors, pumps, diesel engines, and turbines.
• Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience in a supervisory role.
• Good knowledge of engineering systems, startup applications, and industry standards.
• Effective communication and team collaboration skills.
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, and relevant project management tools.
• Understanding of project workflows from design to construction and fabrication.

Preferred Qualifications

• Broad experience in commissioning, startup, operation, maintenance, and testing of Mechanical/Piping Systems in oil & gas processing facilities.
• Familiarity with project-specific workflows and automation tools such as Setroute, Unifier, Aconex, DSCS, PTR, Agile, Navisworks.
• Strong supervision skills with the ability to lead and manage change effectively.
