Talascend is currently seeking a Model Shop Technician for a contract opportunity with our client in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Overview

The role involves building and developing prototypes, operating equipment, managing materials, and ensuring quality control in a model shop environment.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate prototype components based on technical drawings, CAD data, or other design specifications, utilizing wood shop, metal shop, and rapid prototyping.
  • Build both small-scale and large-scale models, ensuring all parts fit together and function as intended.
  • Assemble models using various techniques, including joining, molding, trimming, fasteners and finishing.
  • Determine how to build models to be robust enough to withstand shipping domestically and internationally.
  • Operate a wide range of equipment commonly used in a model shop, including CNC machines, laser cutters, Roland printers, and other fabrication tools.
  • Perform CNC machining tasks on materials such as plastic, foam, acrylic, and others to create precise parts.
  • Utilize additive manufacturing (3D printing) for rapid prototyping and model iteration.
  • Maintain accurate inventory levels of materials such as plastics, foams, acrylics, sheet metal, and other supplies.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning on equipment and machines to ensure optimal performance.
  • Inspect finished models and parts for accuracy, quality, and functionality, making adjustments or corrections as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines in the workshop, ensuring safe handling of equipment, materials, and tools.

Qualifications

  • Some college required
  • Experience - 2 years in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary prototype or model shop environment

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Creo CAM, SolidWorks, and SurfCam preferred.
  • Advanced 3D modeling and CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, Rhino).
  • Familiarity with industrial design principles and practices.
  • Experience in a multidisciplinary prototype environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Stamina to work long hours standing, walking, and working with hands-on tools.
  • Comfortable working with hazardous materials and equipment, adhering to safety protocols.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills for detailed work in assembly, machining, and finishing.
  • Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, and hearing protection when required.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training, vendor visits, or project-related activities.

Shift

Flexibility in work hours may be required to meet project deadlines or to accommodate international shipping schedules.
