Nuclear Systems Design Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking a Nuclear Systems Design Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.
Overview
This role involves designing, integrating, and overseeing sodium processing systems for nuclear applications, ensuring hardware design aligns with project requirements and standards, and collaborating effectively with vendors and design teams.
Responsibilities
- Design of nuclear and industrial systems from requirements through final design.
- Provide oversight to vendors developing mechanical system and component designs for the Natrium reactor.
- Coordinate review of analyses such as thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, heat transfer, and others, integrating results into plant design delivery.
- Integrate as-designed hardware into overall system design.
- Identify and apply correct design codes, including ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc., into plant systems.
- Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex system design.
- Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for design activities within the overall plant design delivery schedule.
- Interface with the design team to manage drawing packages of system designs, including P&IDs, 3D models, and system interface drawings.
- Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects, ensuring deliverables are met and performance is reviewed.
- Establish and maintain system requirements and specification documents such as engineering design specifications.
- Propose, initiate, and oversee testing programs for system qualification as needed.
- Generate design packages for systems, sub-systems, and equipment, coordinating calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications.
- Learn and apply specialized skills in a dynamic and evolving work environment.
Qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical, Chemical, or related discipline from an accredited university
- 4+ years of direct experience with proven mechanical or chemical systems skills
- Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration, especially with nuclear chemical process or fluid system design, is highly desired
- Strong mechanical and/or chemical aptitude with experience in chemistry, fluid and structural analysis, and reading engineering drawings
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
- Attention to detail and a pursuit of technical excellence
- Self-starter with the ability to coordinate and lead a design team with minimal supervision
- Ability to handle multiple projects with competing objectives and resolve conflicts effectively
- Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001 is desired
- Strong communication skills and a high degree of trust and integrity, with a collaborative mindset
