Talascend is currently seeking a Distribution Design Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Durham, North Carolina.

Overview

The role involves developing construction work packages for electric distribution systems, supporting design, permitting, and engineering calculations for overhead and underground distribution projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV through 138kV
  • Perform engineering calculations including structural analysis, pole loading, and conductor sags
  • Develop permitting documents for various authorities having jurisdiction
  • Support field activities, including site inspections and post-construction reviews
  • Conduct root cause analyses of outages and recommend mitigating actions
  • Assist with activities such as developing BOMs, estimating costs, and acquiring easements
  • Ensure compliance with safety, design, and quality standards
  • Travel to sites as needed for inspections and support

Qualifications

  • Requires a BS Degree from an ABET certified university and less than 2 years of relevant experience, or a BS non-engineering degree with less than 5 years relevant experience
  • Experience with NESC standards, ESRI, AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, and GIS is a plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to perform both field and office work
  • Ability to work outdoors and utilize personal vehicle; overnight travel may be required (10-20%)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with utility design and construction standards
  • Knowledge of electric grid hardening, reliability, substation optimization, or joint use projects
  • Experience with geographic information systems and engineering software
