Talascend is currently seeking a GIS Technician for a contract opportunity with our client in Richmond, Virginia.
Overview
- This role involves analyzing geographic information about the earth's surface and providing technical and analytical support for various applications, including environmental management, exploration, land ownership, urban planning, utilities, and demographic marketing.
- The technician will work with GIS software to create and maintain databases and maps, compile geographic data from multiple sources, and analyze spatial data to generate reports and supporting documents.
Responsibilities
- Analyze geographic information using GIS software and programs
- Create and maintain databases and maps with geographically referenced data
- Meet with users to define data needs, project requirements, and desired outputs
- Compile geographic data from censuses, field observations, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps
- Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics and incorporate findings into reports and documents
- Enter new map data through digitization or direct input of coordinate information, applying principles of cartography including coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales
- Follow standard practices and procedures for analyzing geography-related data within limited scope projects
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a GIS, scientific, or equivalent discipline
- At least 1 year of related experience
- Knowledge of GIS principles, cartography, and data analysis methods
