Mechanical Designer
Talascend is currently seeking a Mechanical Designer for a contract opportunity with our client in Bellevue, Washington.
Overview
The Mechanical Designer will create structural and mechanical design solutions for test-related designs, develop 3D CAD models, and produce engineering drawings for advanced nuclear reactor projects. The role involves extensive mechanical/structural design work using mainstream CAD systems and collaborating closely with engineering teams to support project development.
Responsibilities
- Produce robust CAD models that facilitate fast-paced design evolution and derivative creation using advanced CAD modeling techniques
- Develop and maintain highly complex mechanical designs
- Research and propose unique solutions to design challenges
- Conduct trade studies to down-select the best design options
- Support analysis needs such as structural, neutronics, thermal-hydraulic, radiological, and safety assessments through model configurations
- Document design progress, changes, and decisions via internal and external collaboration platforms
- Create supporting technical presentations, documents, and reports as needed
- Produce engineering drawings (layout, detail, interface control, general arrangement) per ASME standards
- Perform tolerance stack-up calculations
- Review drawings for accuracy and conformance to standards via electronic redline processes
- Maintain configuration control of models and drawings using product data management software
- Participate in reviewing design documents and propose improvements
- Contribute to written guidance and standards development
Qualifications
- B.S. degree in electrical, mechanical, chemical engineering or equivalent
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
- CAD proficiency in SolidWorks with at least seven years of CAD experience
- Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5)
- Experience checking fabrication drawings
- Knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA)
- Experience in mechanical and machine design
- Experience with product data management (PDM) systems
- Familiarity with quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001
- Demonstrated experience overseeing supplier and subcontractor organizations
- Experience testing complex mechanical components in high-temperature environments
- Knowledge of nuclear mechanical components or reactor equipment is highly desirable
- Understanding of nuclear quality fabrication and lifecycle management processes is highly desired
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with integrity and trustworthiness
