Talascend is currently seeking a Human Factors I&C Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.

Overview

This role involves acting as the lead I&C human factors engineer for sodium fast reactor technologies, focusing on instrument and control system design, prototype development, testing, and plant system integration. The engineer will ensure human factors considerations are integrated into digital I&C systems and human-system interfaces, supporting licensing and safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Interface and support geographically diverse and international design team members to develop supporting documentation.
  • Conduct and oversee task analyses for displays and controls to develop strategies for monitoring, control, and protection functions.
  • Collaborate and oversee system communication and implementation of HSI design requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations and engineering teams for input on human factors analysis and screen development.
  • Lead design of I&C systems and sub-system functional requirements through final design.
  • Validate that HSIs align with simulation, plant operation, abnormal, surveillance, and emergency procedures.
  • Interface with internal and external customers, suppliers, and regulatory authorities on technical issues.
  • Provide direction to team members and assist with oversight of suppliers and project scope.
  • Develop and review system and component specifications and scopes of work.
  • Perform engineering evaluations in accordance with nuclear codes, standards, licensing requirements, and regulations.
  • Analyze and apply regulatory criteria to complex I&C system designs.
  • Develop and review technical design documents, including system requirements, design descriptions, and human factors analysis.
  • Provide technical oversight of supplier projects and reviews of deliverables.
  • Maintain UIS and data connection mappings for accurate instrumented parameters and controls across panels and displays.
  • Work with PRA/HRA engineers to develop scenarios for human reliability analysis involving digital HSIs and I&C responses.
  • Support continuous improvement and application of nuclear industry best practices.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to ensure HFE requirements are properly incorporated into design, documentation, and licensing.
  • Contribute to internal design reviews, change evaluations, and operational excellence reviews.
  • Support licensing activities related to safety analysis reports.
  • Support design, planning, and execution of HFE verification and validation activities as per project plans.

Qualifications

  • M.S. or PhD degree in human factors, industrial engineering, or equivalent, or 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in I&C engineering for complex processes or nuclear systems, including digital control/monitoring systems and HSIs.
  • At least 3 years of experience applying human factors principles to control room or similar environments, including workplace and workstation design.
  • Familiarity with nuclear-relevant human factors and I&C standards such as NUREG-0711, NUREG-0700, MIL-STD-1472, IEEE standards, ANSI/ANS-3.1, and 10 CFR 50 Appendix B.
  • Experience in I&C development, diagnostics, and implementation with proven ability to design and deliver industrial I&C platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality technical documentation and work within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence.
  • Ability to self-start, lead design efforts, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • High level of trust, integrity, openness in communication, and team fostering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developing process flow diagrams (PFD) and piping & instrument diagrams (P&ID) is desirable.
  • Experience working in the nuclear industry, particularly with emergency operating procedures, abnormal operation procedures, and human factors reviews.
