Nuclear I&C Design Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking a Nuclear I&C Design Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Bellevue, Washington.
Overview
The nuclear I&C design engineer will focus on instrumentation and controls systems development, integration, and design within a nuclear plant environment. This role involves supporting plant radiological design, analysis, and regulatory compliance, acting as a key member of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Interface and support a geographically diverse and international design team to develop supporting design documentation
- Develop and review system- and component-level specifications and scopes of work
- Perform engineering and design evaluations in accordance with nuclear codes, standards, licensing requirements, and NRC regulations
- Specify and analyze instrumentation measurement techniques for sodium fast reactors and integrated energy storage technologies
- Analyze and apply regulatory criteria to complex instrument and control system designs
- Develop and review technical design documents, such as system requirements and interface control documents
- Create and manage drawing packages including P&IDs, control system architecture, and installation drawings
- Generate integrated design packages for key systems and components
- Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects, ensuring deliverables meet requirements
- Support licensing activities related to safety analysis reports
- Assist with planning activities for established systems and components
- Analyze design changes and their impacts, applying effective change control principles
- Lead design of I&C and supporting electrical systems from requirements through final design
Qualifications
- B.S. or higher in controls, electrical, or related discipline from an accredited university
- 10+ years of direct experience with instrumentation and controls systems
- Experience in instrumentation and controls development, diagnostics, and design delivery
- Ability to work with nuclear reactor safety systems or nuclear instrumentation systems (desired but not required)
- Familiarity with IEEE and IEC standards (desired but not required)
- Knowledge of nuclear power plant quality assurance standards such as 10 CFR 50 Appendix B and ASME NQA-1 (desired but not required)
- Experience designing high-temperature processes (desired but not required)
- Proficiency with CAD software, technical writing, communication, and team leadership
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks in a multidisciplinary environment
- High level of trust, integrity, and team-oriented attitude
- Ability to coordinate and lead engineering efforts with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with nuclear reactor safety systems or nuclear instrumentation
- Familiarity with industrial process flow diagrams and piping & instrument diagrams
- Experience with formal I&C system startup testing procedures
