Talascend is currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.

Overview

The senior mechanical design engineer will be responsible for designing solutions for reactor structures and components, with a focus on the development of equipment such as the rotatable plug assembly for advanced nuclear reactors. They will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to produce detailed design solutions and support the fabrication process.

Responsibilities

  • Design of reactor structures and components from requirements through final design.
  • Coordinate inputs and requirements from engineering and project teams to develop equipment and components design solutions.
  • Perform scoping analysis and calculations for various design options.
  • Interface with engineering analysis activities and present design results during reviews.
  • Assess the technical merit of solutions provided by team members and lead design reviews.
  • Interface with equipment suppliers for design and fabrication issue resolution.
  • Support continuous learning and application of nuclear industry best practices to ensure high-quality engineering design and proactively identify process improvement opportunities.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of eight years of equipment/component design experience; relevant M.S. degree credited as two years of experience.
  • Working experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III.
  • Experience writing design specifications.
  • Experience in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
  • Experience in finite element stress analysis, mechanical analysis methods, and commercial mechanical stress analysis modeling tools with emphasis on ANSYS.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; creative thinker.
  • Ability to work with minimal direction to solve challenging problems.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently during a workweek.
  • Familiarity with CAD, SolidWorks preferred.
  • High degree of trust and integrity, open communication, respect, and teamwork orientation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with slewing ring bearings.
  • Experience with elastomeric seals.
