Talascend is currently seeking an Fuel Handling System Design Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.

Overview

this role involves designing primarily mechanical fuel handling and process systems for advanced nuclear reactor projects. the engineer will act as a mechanical system design expert, coordinate with interfacing engineering teams, and contribute to high-performance project delivery.

Responsibilities

  • design nuclear fuel handling systems and sub-systems from requirements through final design
  • coordinate review of analyses such as thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, and heat transfer, integrating results into plant design
  • provide design direction related to thermal and fluid design requirements
  • ensure the application of correct design codes like ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, and NFPA
  • offer technical guidance to engineers on nuclear and non-nuclear design standards
  • analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system designs
  • support planning and maintain schedule adherence for system design activities and overall plant design delivery
  • create and manage drawing packages, including P&ID diagrams, 3D models, and interface drawings
  • interface with design disciplines to specify system requirements and performance criteria
  • provide technical oversight of supplier projects and conduct reviews of deliverables
  • establish and maintain system requirements and specifications such as Engineering Design Specifications
  • propose and initiate testing programs for plant system qualification and oversee test execution
  • generate design packages, including calculations, reports, drawings, and specifications
  • develop and review technical design documents and interface with licensing activities
  • support design reviews, testing, and report generation for system and subsystem designs

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical or related discipline from an accredited university
  • 10+ years of direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills
  • demonstrated experience in designing complex mechanical systems, structures, and equipment, especially nuclear fuel handling systems
  • experience with high-temperature systems and multi-discipline integration highly desired
  • previous experience with nuclear reactors and fuel handling process systems required
  • excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
  • attention to detail with a drive for technical excellence
  • ability to coordinate and lead a design team with minimal direction
  • capability to handle multiple projects with competing objectives and resolve conflicts
  • experience with ASME Section III and quality standards such as NQA-1 or ISO 9001
  • strong communication skills
