Design Engineering Specialist
Talascend is currently seeking a Design Engineering Specialist for a contract opportunity with our client in Warren, Michigan.
Overview
The role involves creating and refining engineering criteria, developing innovative technical solutions, and supporting design integration within the automotive industry. The specialist will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure design and packaging align with program goals.
Responsibilities
- Create, refine, and finalize engineering criteria and collaborate with creative design teams.
- Lead the development of highly integrated technical engineering solutions to address packaging issues while maintaining design aesthetics using physical and math models.
- Utilize DFSS methodologies to manage design trade-offs considering cost, mass, timing, and assembly requirements.
- Develop and analyze alternatives to satisfy regional and brand needs, integrating regional/global requirements.
- Communicate effectively with team members to resolve challenges and facilitate expert team meetings.
- Ensure packaging and studio models meet customer-facing targets such as spaciousness, visibility, and occupant comfort.
- Lead cross-functional surface and integration meetings, including CITs and surface workgroups.
- Drive issue resolution and escalation within responsible areas.
- Support the technical development of design surfaces in digital, full-scale clay models, VR/MR mockups, and clinic properties.
- Benchmark against competition to maintain a competitive integrated package.
- Create NX models for guiding surface development and maintain NX skills.
- Incorporate voice of the customer insights into package design and develop space claims and solutions to maximize space utilization.
- Support virtual assessments and synchronization reviews.
Qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical associate degree with additional certification during transition.
- 5+ years’ experience in automotive design, packaging, or related fields.
- Understanding of engineering principles and automotive design processes.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Aptitude for integrating complex systems with a passion for design.
- High analytical and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency with CAD systems, specifically Unigraphics/NX.
- Experience with interior and exterior surface design, including virtual and physical mockups.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of DFSS methodologies.
- Experience working in automotive packaging and integration.
- Leadership in cross-functional meetings.
- Background in virtual validation and benchmarking against competition.
