Talascend is currently seeking a Laboratory Process Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Plymouth, Michigan.

Overview

The laboratory process engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and supporting testing processes, laboratory workflows, and equipment used to validate products, materials, and systems. This role ensures accurate, repeatable, and efficient testing operations while maintaining compliance with quality, safety, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Work with technical teams to develop, document, and improve test processes, work instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Implement and enforce processes, work instructions, and SOPs as required.
  • Identify bottlenecks and implement process improvements to reduce test cycle time, increase throughput, and enhance data quality.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for testing problems, equipment failures, and process deviations.
  • Define key process parameters and establish control plans for laboratory operations.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to translate test requirements into executable test procedures.
  • Develop ideas for test fixtures, setups, and tooling to support repeatable and safe testing.
  • Support laboratory technicians through training, technical guidance, and by serving as the process SME.
  • Support test cell performance and troubleshooting, minimizing downtime regarding testing and instrumentation needs.
  • Recommend instruments and systems suited for specific quality requirements.
  • Maintain knowledge of new technologies to improve operational quality and develop recommendations accordingly.
  • Ensure laboratory processes comply with internal quality systems (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 17025, or industry standards).
  • Assist with conversion from QS-9000 certification to ISO 17025 via gap analysis.
  • Maintain safety protocols and promote continuous improvement and risk mitigation.
  • Participate in internal and external audits related to test methods and laboratory operations.
  • Develop and deliver presentations to communicate with internal groups.
  • Maintain awareness of the company quality system and develop quality capabilities with engineering, technicians, and management.
  • Observe all safety rules and regulations and act responsibly to ensure safety of others around the work area.
  • Utilize structured problem-solving tools to achieve process excellence.
  • Implement automation and digital solutions to improve workflow efficiency and data integrity.
  • Monitor KPIs such as repeatability, reproducibility, efficiency, and downtime, recommending actions to enhance performance.
  • Resolve problems using innovative techniques, technologies, or concepts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or related field.
  • Experience in laboratory testing, product validation, or process engineering.
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation, data acquisition, and test system design.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis tools (e.g., Minitab, JMP) and process control techniques.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and test standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an automotive, engine, vehicle, or electronics testing environment.
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 lab accreditation requirements.
  • Training or certification in lean, six sigma, PFMEA, or DOE methodology.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, or environmental test equipment.
  • Two or more years of dynamometer testing related experience.
  • Experience with setup and integration of test cell data acquisition and measurement equipment.
  • Familiarity with gasoline, alternative fuels, and diesel engine test cell setups.
  • Knowledge of standardized test cycles and 1065 regulations.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines, either independently or as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated with attention to detail and timely task completion.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
