Operating Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking an Operating Engineer for a contract to hire opportunity with our client in Morrisville, North Carolina.
Overview
The main function of an Operating Engineer is to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair facility equipment on all systems. This role requires demonstrating technical expertise in one craft area such as Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations, along with multi-skills in others to successfully complete daily and weekly work assignments.
Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance, monitoring, and repairs to the mechanical, plumbing, structural, furniture, fire, life safety, and control systems for the facility to keep systems up to standards.
- Maintain responsibility for facility services, preventative maintenance, purchasing and inventory control, contracted maintenance, and general upkeep.
- Maintain equipment through cleaning, inspecting, calibrating, and replacing parts to ensure optimal performance of HVAC systems and related equipment.
- Record readings and make adjustments to ensure proper operation of equipment.
- Comply with safety policies for storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials while maintaining a clean and safe workplace.
- Perform periodic checks of tool and instrument inventory.
- Monitor the quality and pricing of maintenance work performed by outside contractors.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures, maintain good housekeeping, recognize hazards, and propose methods to mitigate risks.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- 2-4 years of experience preferred.
- Experience maintaining and repairing commercial building systems.
- Ability to analyze commercial or industrial mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, identify problems, and implement corrective actions.
- Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel.
- A Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license is not required for this role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of trades schooling in electrical system design, refrigeration, and HVAC.
The shift is Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 4 pm. This position is contract only for now, with the possibility of a full-time employment opportunity in the future. The candidate must hold an EPA Universal Certification, have a strong HVAC background with chiller experience, and be able to work independently. Customer service skills, professionalism, and effective communication are highly valued. The role involves in-house maintenance on HVAC systems supporting a critical lab with high visibility. The work environment features free onsite parking and involves standard maintenance duties including lighting, plumbing, and work tickets.
