Talascend is currently seeking a Facilities Technician for a contract opportunity with our client in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

Overview

This role involves performing maintenance, repairs, and operational support within a vivarium environment, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards. The technician will handle preventative and corrective maintenance on building systems, with a focus on welding, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular vivarium walkthroughs to ensure cleanliness, operational readiness, and compliance with facility and environmental standards
  • Complete all preventative and corrective maintenance for vivarium equipment, including HVAC components, air handling units, lighting systems, water supply systems, alarms, and monitoring devices
  • Respond promptly to daily maintenance requests and vivarium-specific work orders, including plumbing, electrical, lighting, and general repairs
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on HVAC systems, pumps, motors, and mechanical equipment
  • Execute welding tasks (MIG/TIG/arc) for metal repair, fabrication, and structural support, ensuring safe operation and maintenance of welding equipment
  • Conduct routine building inspections, safety checks, and compliance walkthroughs
  • Carry out general facility upkeep such as carpentry, drywall repair, tiling, cabinetry work, and light remodeling
  • Work on ladders, at heights, and wear appropriate PPE (N95 or PAPRs as required)

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training preferred
  • At least 5+ years of maintenance experience in facilities or construction trades
  • Familiarity with chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and HVAC systems
  • Experience performing MIG/TIG/arc welding and equipment troubleshooting
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, work at heights, and stand for extended periods
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) knowledge
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills for coordination with teams and vendors
  • Previous experience working in life sciences or regulated environments is a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with controlled environments, environmental chambers, or regulated research spaces
  • Familiarity with maintenance management software (e.g., Maximo, eMaint)
  • Comfort using mobile devices for inspections and reporting
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotations
