Talascend is currently seeking an Electrical Power Systems Engineer for a direct hire opportunity with our client in Calvert, Alabama.
Overview
The role involves electrical power system engineering activities to support large-scale industrial electrical systems, contributing to the reliability, safety, and performance of complex electrical infrastructure, primarily in steelmaking and heavy industrial environments.
Responsibilities
- Lead electrical power engineering activities for large projects, from concept through commissioning and startup
- Develop and review electrical power distribution architectures, single-line diagrams, and equipment layouts
- Establish electrical design criteria, specifications, and performance requirements
- Perform and review load flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, protective coordination, motor starting, grounding, and power quality studies
- Coordinate electrical system design, equipment selection, and technical evaluations
- Support electrical equipment testing, installation, and commissioning activities
- Provide technical support during electrical construction, startup, and system turnover
- Review OEM proposals, drawings, and calculations to ensure they meet project and safety standards
- Maintain electrical documentation including one-line diagrams, studies, and test reports
- Coordinate with mechanical, civil, instrumentation, and other project disciplines
- Participate in safety reviews, design reviews, and risk assessments
- Support electrical reliability, power quality, and energy efficiency initiatives
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with 10 years of relevant industrial electrical power experience, or a Trade School Diploma with 20 years of relevant experience
- Experience with LV, MV, and HV electrical power distribution systems
- Strong understanding of substations, transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relaying, motor control, grounding, and power distribution
- Experience supporting large-scale industrial capital projects from concept to commissioning
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, schematics, and engineering drawings
- Knowledge of electrical system studies and software such as ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower
- Demonstrated ability to perform technical evaluations and develop specifications
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Familiarity with applicable standards like NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, IEC
- Ability to coordinate multiple activities in a fast-paced project environment
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, reliability, and quality
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with EAF and continuous casting electrical power systems
- Knowledge of high-power EAF electrical systems, including furnace transformers and related distribution
- Experience with HV/MV substations, transformers, switchgear, and bus systems
- Knowledge of protective relaying, coordination studies, arc-flash studies, and motor starting studies
- Experience with electrical power monitoring and energy management systems
- Knowledge of power quality, harmonics, flicker, and system reliability
- Experience with electrical equipment testing and commissioning
- SAP or similar enterprise resource planning experience
