Talascend is currently seeking an Automation Engineer for a direct hire opportunity with our client in Calvert, Alabama.

Overview

The automation engineer will be responsible for leading automation engineering activities within steelmaking, heavy industrial, manufacturing, or large-scale capital projects, focusing on process control, project execution, and system integration to support business objectives and improve operational performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead automation engineering activities for large-scale projects, from concept to final acceptance
  • Provide engineering leadership for equipment and process automation systems, including EAF, caster, FES, and water systems
  • Participate in design, construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and startup of automation systems
  • Support project coordination with third-party contractors, OEMs, and internal teams
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, including design documentation, P&IDs, schematics, and control narratives
  • Oversee FAT activities with OEMs and ensure proper system integration and functionality
  • Support site acceptance testing, troubleshooting, and system turnover
  • Coordinate automation activities with other project disciplines such as mechanical, civil, electrical, and piping
  • Provide technical training and support to maintenance and operations teams
  • Prepare and present technical reports, project updates, and performance data
  • Support project schedules, cost estimates, and execution strategies
  • Ensure safety and compliance with applicable standards and regulations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or instrumentation engineering with 10 years of relevant industrial experience or a trade school diploma with 20 years of relevant industrial experience
  • Experience in electrical automation, controls, manufacturing, commissioning, or service for industrial automation systems
  • Experience working on large-scale steel industry capital projects from concept through commissioning
  • Familiarity with automation systems such as GE P80i, Siemens S7, Siemens TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley, or similar platforms
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols including LAN, Profibus, Profinet
  • Strong understanding of PLCs, HMIs, drives, VFDs, motor control, and industrial instrumentation
  • Proficient in troubleshooting, project management, and technical documentation
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to develop technical training for maintenance and operations personnel
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties through relevant experience, training, or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with EAF, continuous casting, FES, or other heavy industrial processes
  • Knowledge of industrial safety systems and safety PLC applications
  • Experience with industrial process automation systems and Open Platform Communications (OPC, OPC-UA)
  • Experience leading factory acceptance testing (FAT)
  • Knowledge of NEC and NFPA 70E standards
  • Experience with project management tools and SAP
  • Knowledge of P&IDs, electrical schematics, and control systems documentation
