Talascend is currently seeking an Export Compliance Officer for a remote, direct hire opportunity with our client.

Overview

The export and import control officer (EICO) is responsible for managing and maintaining compliance with u.s. export control, import, and international trade requirements relevant to defense products, technical data, software, services, and international business activities. The role involves collaborating with various internal teams and external partners to ensure regulatory adherence and proper handling of export/import documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the company’s export and import compliance program, policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Determine and document export classifications, including usml/itar and ear/ccl classifications.
  • Support classification and jurisdiction of products, technical data, software, and services.
  • Review international transactions, customers, suppliers, and other parties for compliance requirements.
  • Coordinate licensing requirements, applications, and submissions with relevant government agencies.
  • Maintain records supporting import and export authorizations, licenses, and compliance determinations.
  • Establish procedures for controlled handling and transfer of technical data, including foreign access considerations.
  • Support compliance with itar, ear, ofac sanctions, customs requirements, and other trade regulations.
  • Coordinate import activities including classification, customs documentation, valuation, and duties.
  • Review shipping documentation, purchase orders, and contracts for export/import compliance.
  • Engage with freight forwarders, customs brokers, suppliers, and customers to resolve trade compliance issues.
  • Develop and deliver export/import compliance training to employees and contractors.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and assess their impact on operations.
  • Conduct internal compliance reviews, audits, investigations, disclosures, and support government inquiries.
  • Maintain export/import compliance manuals and procedures.
  • Advise management and employees on compliance risks and escalate violations promptly.
  • Support the implementation of technology and controls to prevent unauthorized exports or transfers.
  • Perform other compliance-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in international trade, supply chain, business, law, compliance, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of experience in export/import compliance within the u.s. defense industry.
  • Working knowledge of itar, ear, and u.s. sanctions and customs requirements.
  • Experience with export classification, licensing, screening, recordkeeping, and compliance documentation.
  • Experience working with the directorate of defense trade controls (ddtc) and bureau of industry and security (bis).
  • Experience supporting dsp-5, dsp-73, taa, mla, or other ddtc authorizations.
  • Experience with aes/eei filings and u.s. customs import processes.
  • Familiarity with ofac regulations and sanctions screening.
  • Experience with defense contracting and dfars requirements related to import and export controls.
  • Familiarity with foreign-person/access-control procedures.
  • Experience conducting internal export compliance assessments or audits.
  • Professional certification such as ces, cgbp, or other relevant trade compliance certification is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Contracts or logistics background.
  • Exposure to financial transaction processes.
  • A willingness to learn and develop.
