Talascend is currently seeking a Field Technician for a contract opportunity with our client in Richmond, Virginia.
Overview
This role involves supporting the Joint Use/Fiber Make Ready Program by performing field data collection related to telecommunications attachments to electric distribution infrastructure. The position offers hands-on experience with electric distribution systems, GIS technology, and utility field operations, primarily in a field-based environment.
Responsibilities
- Collect field data including measurements, photographs, and equipment information related to utility poles, electric, and telecommunications facilities.
- Use specialized measuring equipment to obtain attachment and facility heights.
- Document existing electric and communication infrastructure, identify potential Make Ready requirements, and record field conditions for engineering review.
- Coordinate with team members to plan efficient routes to project sites.
- Ensure data accuracy and completeness for engineering and design review.
- Maintain safety protocols and navigate varying outdoor environments.
- Communicate effectively with team members and report any unusual conditions or hazards encountered during fieldwork.
Qualifications
- Ability and willingness to perform approximately 90% field-based work.
- Experience with GIS platforms such as Esri ArcGIS or similar.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate rental or company vehicles safely.
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Availability for regular overnight travel within Virginia and North Carolina service territories.
- Comfort with outdoor work, walking over uneven terrain, and handling field equipment weighing around 40 lbs.
- Strong communication skills, ownership mindset, reliability, problem-solving skills, and adaptability.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; degree in GIS, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred but experience may substitute.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AutoCAD, AUD, SpidaCALC, or other engineering/design software.
- Previous outdoor, utility, surveying, inspection, or similar hands-on experience.
- Excellent time-management and organizational skills.
- Strong situational awareness and safety focus.
