Talascend is currently seeking an Associate Distribution Engineer for a contract to hire opportunity with our client in Durham, North Carolina.
Overview
The role involves supporting electric utility design engineering projects, ensuring high-quality work, and working both in the field and office environments. Candidates will gain experience in various areas including GIS design, power calculations, and compliance with industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems from 4kV through 138kV
- Coordinate conflicting utilities and field engineering design requirements in dense urban environments
- Support the development of work permits, easements, and ROW applications
- Design mainline vault medium voltage switchgear, network systems, and distribution system protection
- Perform engineering calculations such as structural analysis for pole loading and conductor sags
- Develop permitting documents for various authorities having jurisdiction
- Provide engineering support during construction and conduct post-construction reviews
- Conduct root cause analysis of outages and propose mitigation strategies
Qualifications
- Completed Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET-accredited institution
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Ability to utilize a personal vehicle for travel; willingness to perform fieldwork as needed
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work in outdoor environments on occasion
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida-Calc, or similar
- Experience using CAD tools, MicroStation and/or GIS
- Knowledge of NESC and design standards
- Professional attributes such as a collaborative attitude, positive demeanor, and professional appearance
