Talascend is currently seeking a Rail Construction Resident Engineer for a direct hire opportunity in the San Francisco, CA area.

Overview

The Resident Engineer will be a Project Manager responsible for overseeing construction managers, inspectors, contractors and activities related to planning, inspection, and design reviews of construction and maintenance projects and managing his or her own tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Be able to self-manage
  • Perform FRA mandated inspections
  • Host and record weekly planning/construction review meetings
  • Manage other inspectors and supporting staff
  • Create Special Inspection Schedules and provide assistance in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems during construction
  • Discuss and coordinate engineering design or construction project activities with design engineering staff and other affected engineering personnel
  • Maintain awareness of progress on assigned engineering design or construction projects to ensure compliance with project schedule and budget
  • Development and Preparation of Long-Range Plans for State of Good Repair (SGR) Improvements
  • Provide constructability reviews and developing/analyzing construction phasing from the railroads’ perspective
  • Be able to communicate effectively with contractors and railroad managers
  • Ability to read and understand construction and phasing plans
  • Development of capital and maintenance work projects to reduce and control the risks associated with railway operations
  • Prioritize site interventions as a result of determinations from site inspection, monitoring, and risk assessments
  • Verify quantities of materials received or used
  • Verify distances to ensure accuracy of dimensions of installations and layouts
  • Prepare daily, monthly, and final completion reports as needed
  • Proficient in railroad inspection maintenance and rehabilitation
  • Capable of balancing multiple responsibilities and concurrent activities and initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned or required to meet the business needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, related field or 10 years equivalent field experience
  • 5 years of experience or better managing railroad and track projects for commuter, passenger, or class 1 railroad

Requirements

  • Expert in the field, understanding customer needs and the goals for projects to enhance service/safety, as well as staying current on the latest technologies which, combined with lessons learned, allows personnel to leverage and develop practical solutions for their rail network
  • Applying logical thought processes and organizing resources in order to solve issues and meet commitments
  • Making decisions and seizing opportunities in the context of business objectives
  • Satisfying internal and external customer expectations and developing customer partnerships
  • Proficiency with electronic communications including e-mail and text as well as standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Ability to assess jobsite risks and hazards and enforce contractor compliance with the mitigation plans
  • Ability to review and understand project specific design plans
  • Familiarity with Construction Project Schedules

Preferred Requirements

  • Civil construction experience
  • P.E. is preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
