Nuclear Packaging and Transportation Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking a Nuclear Packaging and Transportation Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.
Overview
This role involves supporting the development and implementation of a nuclear packaging and transportation program for a next-generation reactor project. the engineer will collaborate with internal and external teams to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and facilitate efficient shipping and transportation of nuclear materials.
Responsibilities
- Actively participate in the development of the nuclear packaging and transportation program to ensure equipment and services readiness in compliance with schedule needs
- Evaluate packaging needs based on various scenarios to support reactor operations
- Interface with procurement and contract administrators from procurement through delivery of shipping containers
- Collaborate with design, testing, licensing, and fabrication teams for shipping containers
- Support onsite oversight during fabrication of shipping containers as needed
- Assist in supporting the company's 10 CFR50 QA program related to packaging activities
- Help ensure compliance with 10 CFR 71 and 49 CFR regulations
- Develop specifications and testing documentation
- maintain schedules related to shipping containers and participate in design, procedure, and test reviews
- Assist in developing procurement strategies for transportation services
- Participate in the transportation risk management plan and develop safety and security procedures in line with regulations
- Serve as the point of contact for technical aspects regarding nuclear material packaging and transportation
- Support the development of logistics programs to support reactor deployment scaling
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent preferred; degrees in other disciplines will be considered
- 2-10 years of engineering experience
- Familiarity with nuclear industry and terminology from experience with nuclear logistics providers, power stations, fuel fabricators, laboratories, or navy nuclear programs
- Ability to read and interpret regulations from government entities regulating radioactive material shipments
- Familiarity with hazardous material transport, especially Class 7 materials (desirable)
- Knowledge of nuclear fuel fabrication, shipping container design and fabrication, and radioactive material transportation (desirable)
- Familiarity with austenitic steel fabrication
- Comfortable working with regulatory guides
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks with a distributed team
