Associate Distribution Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking an Associate Distribution Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Asheville, North Carolina.
Overview
The Associate Distribution Engineer will assist in the design and development of electrical distribution systems, working both in the field and in the office to ensure projects meet quality, safety, and client standards. This role provides opportunities to develop professional skills and participate in a variety of engineering activities related to electrical distribution projects.
Responsibilities
- Develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV through 138kV mostly associated with programmatic work such as overloaded transformers, inspection and maintenance, joint use, and inspection reports.
- Work with clients to develop work packages for projects including OH, UG, URD, Make Ready, and Street Light projects using GIS and WMS systems such as GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer, and Maximo.
- Perform engineering calculations including structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, conductor sags and tensions, and voltage drop and flicker.
- Assist with permitting documents, site inspections, and post-construction reviews.
- Support coordination of conflicting utilities and field engineering design requirements.
- Travel as needed to perform site inspections and field work, with the possibility of performing work in outdoor environments.
- Ensure compliance with safety, design, and quality standards.
- Support root cause analysis of outages and mitigation efforts using engineering principles.
Qualifications
- Completed Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET accredited institution.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Ability to utilize a personal vehicle for travel (reimbursed).
- Willingness to perform both field and office work, with ability to work in outdoor environments.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida-Calc or similar.
- Experience with CAD tools, MicroStation, and/or GIS.
- Experience familiar with NESC standards.
- Knowledge of design standards related to electrical distribution systems.
