Chief Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking a Chief Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Detroit, Michigan.
Overview
The role involves overseeing the operation management and daily leadership of the facility maintenance team to ensure safety, efficiency, and cost-effective operation of machinery and systems within the building. A senior-level professional, responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the building maintenance department to protect and enhance the value of assets and ensure the proper functioning of engineering systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategic plans, goals, and objectives for the department aligned with organizational vision.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, teamwork, and innovation within the facility maintenance department.
- Identify safety hazards and develop remediation plans to ensure a safe working environment, including managing safety training programs.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory laws and guidelines related to building operations and maintenance.
- Maintain all infrastructure and compliance documentation, including building drawings and regulatory records.
- Ensure adherence to safety rules such as Lock Out Tag Out, NEC70e, OSHA 10, and complete required electrical training.
- Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of engineering systems and procedures.
- Monitor and maintain HVAC, refrigeration, water cooling, boilers, HVAC equipment, pumps, valves, piping, and electrical equipment.
- Perform preventive and repair tasks, and oversee the PM program for HVAC systems.
- Manage departmental budgets, resources, and projects to meet operational and financial goals.
- Provide technical guidance for troubleshooting and decision-making within engineering teams.
- Train, develop, and evaluate engineering staff while fostering a safe and inclusive work environment.
- Collaborate with other departments, external contractors, vendors, and regulatory bodies.
- Communicate project progress and challenges to senior management and stakeholders.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of facility-related work experience, including customer service, leadership, and supervisory roles.
- Minimum 6 years of documented experience in the HVAC or Electrical trade, or minimum 4 years of experience plus 2 years of supporting education.
- Managerial experience required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of maintenance processes and construction planning.
- Experience with HVAC, fluid handling/pumping, filtration, mechanical and electrical systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and CMMS systems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven record of delivering excellent internal and external customer service.
- Certification as a Universal Technician for CFCs (or within 90 days of employment).
- Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent (preferred but not required).
- 2-year degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional certifications or training related to electrical or mechanical systems.
