Talascend is currently seeking an Automation Engineer for a direct hire opportunity with our client in Calvert, Alabama.

Overview

The automation engineer will provide on-site automation engineering support through technical leadership and ongoing optimization of process improvement projects within the continuous galvanizing and annealing lines. The role involves leading automation system enhancements, troubleshooting, and supporting safety and quality standards in a highly automated manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in a highly automated production facility
  • Lead and participate in continuous improvement projects to increase productivity, availability, and efficiency
  • Improve process automation by leading and supporting electrical improvement projects, focusing on automatic control systems and associated field devices
  • Lead and participate in root cause failure analysis
  • Continuously optimize process automation systems utilizing process data acquisition systems
  • Lead and participate in the commissioning of new equipment
  • Support training, coaching, and mentoring for maintenance technicians and operations team members
  • Plan improvement activities using SAP software
  • Work in interdisciplinary teams during process improvement activities
  • Collaborate with process engineers and mechanical engineers on daily operations
  • Participate in on-call rotation to support production 24/7
  • Demonstrate commitment to safety, quality, teamwork, accountability, relationships, and sustainability

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, instrumentation engineering, industrial electricity, or related discipline
  • 5+ years of direct experience in electrical automation within manufacturing, commissioning, or field service
  • Proficient in automation systems in steel, metals processing, or other heavy industries
  • Proficient in industrial process-automation systems
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) such as General Electric HPCi/P80i, Siemens S7, Siemens TIA Portal, LogiCAD
  • Basic understanding of robotics (e.g., ABB, Nachi)
  • Advanced knowledge of HMI/SCADA systems: Wonderware InTouch, Siemens WinCC
  • Experience with process data acquisition systems such as ibaPDA
  • Knowledge of industrial communication systems (LAN, Profibus, Profinet)
  • Advanced understanding of industrial instrumentation
  • Familiarity with OPC and OPC UA communication frameworks
  • Experience with motor control systems including VFDs, PLC-based regulation, and MCCs
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals and drawing standards
  • Experience with industrial safety systems and standards
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties through relevant experience, training, or education
