Talascend is currently seeking a Process Engineer for a direct hire opportunity with our client in Calvert, Alabama.
Overview
The role involves providing technical leadership and support focused on process technology, metallurgical systems, and production equipment to support steelmaking operations, particularly in EAF and continuous casting processes. The engineer will oversee system integration, commissioning, performance, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient production.
Responsibilities
- Provide process, metallurgical, and technology equipment leadership for the project, ensuring alignment with project objectives and plant operations.
- Lead process and technology activities from conception through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, and production ramp-up.
- Define process requirements, operating philosophies, design criteria, equipment specifications, and technical standards.
- Validate OEM designs against plant conditions and operational needs, identifying and resolving gaps.
- Coordinate with various engineering disciplines and participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, and risk assessments.
- Lead or support technical evaluation, selection, and procurement of equipment, reviewing proposals and performance commitments.
- Support the integration of process technology with automation, instrumentation, and production systems.
- Lead commissioning, startup, and performance testing activities, including developing test plans, executing trials, and validating OEM performance.
- Analyze process and metallurgical data to identify constraints, quality issues, and opportunities for process optimization.
- Support production ramp-up, process stabilization, and continuous improvement efforts following commissioning.
- Provide technical training and transfer knowledge to operations and maintenance teams.
- Coordinate OEM and contractor activities during installation, commissioning, and startup.
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, environmental, and regulatory standards, maintaining awareness of the company’s standards and certifications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related technical discipline
- At least 10 years of experience in steelmaking, process engineering, metallurgical technology, or related fields
- Experience with large-scale steel industry capital projects from concept through startup and performance guarantee
- Strong understanding of EAF and continuous casting processes and technologies
- Experience working with OEMs, engineering firms, contractors, operations, and maintenance teams
- Ability to read and interpret process flow diagrams, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and engineering drawings
- Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
- Experience with process equipment, metallurgical systems, and production systems in a heavy industrial environment
- Ability to evaluate equipment capabilities and plant conditions against production requirements
- Proven ability to lead technical evaluations, design reviews, and commissioning activities
- Familiarity with process modeling, data analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive experience with EAF and continuous casting technology, including process optimization and equipment maintenance
- Knowledge of metallurgical process control, steel chemistry, and quality assurance
- Experience with equipment such as EAFs, ladle furnaces, tundish systems, casting machines, and strand handling equipment
- Experience with FES and auxiliary systems, process gas, and energy optimization
- Familiarity with SAP and project management software
- Experience leading FAT, SAT, and performance guarantee testing
- Knowledge of industry standards such as ISO 14001, IATF 16949, and ISO 17025
- Strong leadership and decision-making abilities
