Talascend is currently seeking a Distribution Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Houston, Texas.

Overview

The distribution engineer will be responsible for electric utility design engineering, including developing design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems. The role involves working closely with clients to ensure high-quality project execution and support during construction phases.

Responsibilities

  • Independently develop design and construction work packages for electrical distribution systems.
  • Review work provided by clients and assess scope requirements.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as structural analysis, conductor sag and tension, voltage drop, and flicker.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including post-construction reviews to ensure standards are met.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of outages and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate conflicting utilities and field engineering design requirements.
  • Assess and develop large design packages for complex projects in dense urban environments.
  • Work both in the field and in the office, including customer-site visits for data collection.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience working directly with an electric utility or an electric utility consulting company performing electric distribution design engineering.
  • Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, Spida-Calc, O-Calc or similar.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to utilize a personal vehicle for travel (reimbursed at IRS rates).
  • Willingness to perform both field and office work, including outdoor environments.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NESC Standards, ESRI, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and GIS.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis, guying calculations, cable pulling, and protective device coordination.
  • Experience with work management software and job estimating tools.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools.
  • Collaborative attitude and inclusivity of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain a positive attitude.
