Talascend is currently seeking a Fitter Trainer for a direct hire opportunity with our client in Haltom City, Texas.
Overview
The Fitter Trainer designs, delivers, and continuously improves the fitter training pipeline, including assessments, trainee programs, and curriculum maintenance. The role ensures trainees produce quality fit-ups and maintains objective standards for classification decisions.
Responsibilities
- Administer and score new-hire assessments, partner with HR, and recommend hire status based on scores.
- Run the structured 30/60/90-day trainee curriculum, including delivering training on drawings, fit-up, and time management.
- Conduct weekly hands-on evaluations and provide feedback to trainees.
- Run cross-training programs for other shop employees transitioning into fit-up roles.
- Coach and proctor classification tests for C and B fitters preparing for next classifications.
- Maintain and revise training curriculum, lesson materials, rubrics, and test bank.
- Track trainee progress and report certification metrics monthly.
- Coordinate with QC for certification quality audits.
- Manage early escalation of at-risk trainees and recommend improvement plans or reassignments.
- Model and enforce all safety programs; maintain personal fit-up proficiency.
- Perform production fit-up work as needed to maintain skills.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED, plus a minimum of 5 years' fitting/fabrication experience, including tapered tubular poles.
- A-Fitter classification (or equivalent proficiency).
- 2+ years' experience training, mentoring, or leading shop employees preferred.
- Proficiency reading and interpreting blueprints and weld symbols; ability to teach both.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and ERP Global Shop.
- Experience with video conferencing software (TEAMS, Zoom, etc).
- Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to break complex fit-up work into teachable steps and adjust methods.
- Knowledge of overhead and jib crane operation and rigging fundamentals.
- Thorough knowledge of fit-up hand tools, torches, grinders, and layout instruments.
- Knowledge of welding symbols, diagrams, and downstream requirements of UT-passable welds.
- Objective, documented evaluation habits; comfortable failing a test piece that does not meet standard.
- Ability to schedule training coverage across shifts within a standard 40-hour week.
- Reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education.
