Talascend is currently seeking a Chemical Process Scientist for a contract opportunity with our client in Mapleton, Illinois.
Overview
This role involves hands-on chemical synthesis, process development, and plant support for product lines at the Mapleton plant. The successful candidate will work collaboratively on new product introductions, troubleshooting, and process optimization in an industrial chemical laboratory environment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct hands-on synthesis and process development, including oleochemical synthesis at reaction scales from 100 mL to 4L, often working with pressurized equipment
- Interpret analytical results provided by QC laboratory
- Manage raw material receiving to shipping of final products
- Support new product introduction (NPI) work and investigate corrective actions for production issues
- Assist with qualification of raw materials and administrative tasks such as project management, safety, and training
- Prepare bi-monthly reports and ongoing project summaries
- Participate in regular company-required training and group meetings
- Collaborate with team members to interpret reaction and analytical data, serving as a role model for safe work practices
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in chemistry or related field with at least two years of experience or MS/BS with at least five years of experience
- Attention to safety and safe work practices in an industrial chemical laboratory, including experience working with hazardous substances
- Industrial synthesis and/or process optimization experience, especially related to fatty acid, hydrogenation, and/or amine chemistry
- Experience with high pressure equipment preferred
- Experience with wet chemistry analytics, IR, and NMR preferred
- Good communication and presentation skills; ability to work within cross-regional and cross-cultural teams
- Comprehensive technical and chemical knowledge with the ability to analyze R&D and production data to identify problems and provide guidance
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 for data analysis, documentation, reporting, and presentation
- Strong and proactive verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with high pressure equipment
- Experience with wet chemistry analytics such as IR and NMR
- Experience in the fatty acid, hydrogenation, or amine chemistry areas
