Talascend is currently seeking a Critical Environments Operating Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Eagan, Minnesota.

Overview

This role involves maintaining mission-critical data center infrastructure to ensure 100% uptime. The engineer will operate, monitor, and maintain sophisticated electrical and mechanical systems in a high-stakes, 24/7 environment, supporting vital digital operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain all critical building systems, including fire/life safety, HVAC, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, plumbing, controls, UPS systems, generators, switchgear, power distribution, and transformers
  • Monitor, adjust, and maintain refrigeration, chilled water, air conditioning equipment, boilers, pumps, valves, piping, and electrical systems to optimize performance
  • Record equipment readings, analyze system operations, identify issues, and implement immediate corrective actions
  • Manage work orders through CMMS, coordinate with vendors, and respond to customer-facing tickets promptly and professionally
  • Thoroughly understand data center infrastructure to effectively manage incidents and events affecting critical systems
  • Respond to site emergencies and follow emergency escalation procedures to protect operations
  • Maintain safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials, ensuring workplace safety and compliance

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in a data center or critical facility environment
  • Experience with mission-critical building systems such as UPS, emergency generators, switchgear, and power distribution equipment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting activities and conveying technical information
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, Google Suite, and CMMS applications
  • Physical ability to lift at least 50 lbs, climb ladders up to 30 feet, work at heights, and navigate rooftops
  • Flexibility to work different schedules, including holidays, and respond to emergencies
  • Ability to walk, climb, bend, kneel, and work overhead in large settings

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Corrigo work order management system
  • Universal EPA 608 certification for refrigerant handling
  • NFPA 70E electrical safety training
  • Experience in critical infrastructure or 24/7 operational environments
  • Background in industrial controls, BAS, or energy management systems
  • Vendor management and contractor coordination experience
  • Technical certifications in electrical, mechanical, or HVAC systems
