HVAC/Refrigeration Technician
Talascend is currently seeking an HVAC/Refrigeration Technician for a contract to hire opportunity with our client in Andover, Massachusetts.
Work Shift: 2nd Shift: Tuesday – Saturday, 2:00PM – 10:30PM
Overview
This position focuses on maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC and refrigeration equipment across multiple buildings in a campus setting, primarily in a life sciences environment. It involves hands-on technical work with an emphasis on HVAC-R systems, building automation, and preventative maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Monitor operation of refrigeration, HVAC, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, VAV systems, and related equipment
- Respond immediately to system alarms, troubleshoot issues, and take corrective actions
- Log complaints, update statuses, and follow up in the CMMS database
- Analyze system operations to identify causes of problems and implement solutions
- Perform preventive maintenance on building and critical system equipment
- Install and repair piping, valves, filters, hot water systems, and HVAC units including package units, mini-splits, actuators, and VAVs
- Service water heaters, motors, heating units, pumps, and air compressors
- Rebuild heat exchangers and replace bearings and seals in equipment
- Monitor, adjust, and maintain refrigeration, HVAC, and related systems
- Respond to emergency alarms and participate in on-call coverage
- Record system readings and document all maintenance activities in CMMS
- Assist other technicians with major repairs and maintenance tasks
- Ensure safe handling of refrigeration and compressed gases
- Maintain accurate records of materials, labor, and costs in the work order system
- Maintain work areas and tools in proper condition
- Report equipment conditions to management and ensure compliance with safety standards
Qualifications
- High school diploma or state equivalent
- Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License (active)
- 2 years of related trade schooling or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years’ experience with HVAC/mechanical systems
- Strong troubleshooting skills for HVAC and refrigeration equipment
- Proficiency with computer systems, including Microsoft Office and Outlook
- Knowledge of OSHA standards and local codes
- Ability to operate hand tools and technical equipment
- Physical ability to work in confined spaces and on building roofs
- Valid driver’s license
- Willingness to participate in on-call rotation
Preferred Qualifications
- Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractor License
- EPA certification for refrigerant handling
- Experience with centrifugal chillers and cooling tower systems
- Knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Experience with Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
- Familiarity with CMMS
- Ability to read mechanical blueprints and schematics
- Experience with commercial boiler systems
- Background in commercial or industrial building maintenance
- Knowledge of energy conservation practices for HVAC
- Experience with emergency power and backup systems
