HVAC Technician
Talascend is currently seeking an HVAC Technician for a contract to hire opportunity with our client in Andover, Massachusetts.
Work Shift: 3rd Shift: Tuesday-Saturday, 11pm-7:30am
Overview
This position involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC and refrigeration equipment across multiple buildings in a campus setting. The role requires hands-on technical work in a life sciences environment, with familiarity in building automation systems, computerized maintenance management systems, and blueprint reading.
Responsibilities
- Monitor operation of refrigeration, HVAC, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, VAV systems, and related equipment
- Respond immediately to system alarms, troubleshoot issues and take appropriate corrective action
- Log complaints, status updates, and follow-up actions in CMMS database
- Analyze system operations to determine causes of problems, make adjustments, and implement solutions
- Perform preventive maintenance on building and critical system equipment
- Install and repair piping, valves, filters, hot water systems, and HVAC units including package units, mini-splits, actuators, and VAVs
- Service water heaters, motors, heating units, pumps, and air compressors
- Rebuild heat exchangers and replace bearings and seals in equipment
- Check CMMS for new service requests and respond promptly
- Record system readings and document all maintenance activities in CMMS database
- Report equipment conditions to management
- Assist other technicians with major repairs and maintenance tasks
- Ensure safe handling of refrigeration and other compressed gases
- Maintain accurate records of materials, labor, and costs in work order system
- Keep work areas clean and return tools to proper storage locations
- Repair and correct alarm conditions, monitor system operation, and make adjustments to ensure proper functioning
- Inform upper management about equipment conditions and perform preventive maintenance
- Install and repair HVAC units, pumps, motors, heat exchangers, piping, valves, and controls
- Comply with safety policies and ensure accurate R&M data collection
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License (active)
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working with HVAC and mechanical systems
- Strong troubleshooting skills for HVAC and refrigeration equipment
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Knowledge of OSHA standards and local codes
- Proficiency with computer-based systems including Microsoft Office and Outlook
- Skill in operating electric hand tools and required technical equipment
- Valid driver’s license
- Physical ability to work in confined spaces, on rooftops, and lift up to 50 lbs
- Willingness to participate in on-call rotation
Preferred Qualifications
- Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractor License
- EPA certification for handling refrigerants
- Experience with centrifugal chillers and cooling tower systems
- Knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Experience with Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
- Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints and schematics
- Experience with commercial boiler systems
- Background in commercial or industrial building maintenance
- Knowledge of energy conservation practices for HVAC systems
- Experience with emergency power and backup systems
