Talascend is currently seeking an HVAC Technician for a contract to hire opportunity with our client in Andover, Massachusetts.

Work Shift: 3rd Shift: Tuesday-Saturday, 11pm-7:30am

Overview

This position involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC and refrigeration equipment across multiple buildings in a campus setting. The role requires hands-on technical work in a life sciences environment, with familiarity in building automation systems, computerized maintenance management systems, and blueprint reading.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor operation of refrigeration, HVAC, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, VAV systems, and related equipment
  • Respond immediately to system alarms, troubleshoot issues and take appropriate corrective action
  • Log complaints, status updates, and follow-up actions in CMMS database
  • Analyze system operations to determine causes of problems, make adjustments, and implement solutions
  • Perform preventive maintenance on building and critical system equipment
  • Install and repair piping, valves, filters, hot water systems, and HVAC units including package units, mini-splits, actuators, and VAVs
  • Service water heaters, motors, heating units, pumps, and air compressors
  • Rebuild heat exchangers and replace bearings and seals in equipment
  • Check CMMS for new service requests and respond promptly
  • Record system readings and document all maintenance activities in CMMS database
  • Report equipment conditions to management
  • Assist other technicians with major repairs and maintenance tasks
  • Ensure safe handling of refrigeration and other compressed gases
  • Maintain accurate records of materials, labor, and costs in work order system
  • Keep work areas clean and return tools to proper storage locations
  • Repair and correct alarm conditions, monitor system operation, and make adjustments to ensure proper functioning
  • Inform upper management about equipment conditions and perform preventive maintenance
  • Install and repair HVAC units, pumps, motors, heat exchangers, piping, valves, and controls
  • Comply with safety policies and ensure accurate R&M data collection

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License (active)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working with HVAC and mechanical systems
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for HVAC and refrigeration equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and local codes
  • Proficiency with computer-based systems including Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • Skill in operating electric hand tools and required technical equipment
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Physical ability to work in confined spaces, on rooftops, and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractor License
  • EPA certification for handling refrigerants
  • Experience with centrifugal chillers and cooling tower systems
  • Knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Experience with Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints and schematics
  • Experience with commercial boiler systems
  • Background in commercial or industrial building maintenance
  • Knowledge of energy conservation practices for HVAC systems
  • Experience with emergency power and backup systems
