Talascend is currently seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician for a contract opportunity with our client in South Bend, Indiana.

Overview

This role involves supporting activities across various laboratories within the materials engineering organization, performing analytical and benchtop chemistry techniques, and maintaining laboratory instruments and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily workload in the chemistry, carbon, and metals labs, including managing incoming work in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), prioritizing tasks, and communicating with customers and lab team members.
  • Perform titrations for solution analysis of production processing chemistries.
  • Perform Salt Fog analysis utilizing standard industry techniques.
  • Conduct Oxygen Nitrogen Hydrogen (ONH), coined density, and fusion boundary analysis of powder materials.
  • Perform viscosity, refractive index, specific gravity, and turbidity analysis of various coatings.
  • Prepare samples for X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.
  • Perform cross sectioning of materials and parts, and analyze using metallography techniques.
  • Utilize microscope instrumentation and software to capture images and measurements.
  • Operate various analytical instruments.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to define appropriate test methods that meet requirements.
  • Manage solvents, acids, bases, chemicals, and consumables inventories.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain laboratory test equipment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a laboratory environment
  • Demonstration of machining, manufacturing, and mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to perform advanced laboratory techniques, such as titrations and wet bench chemistry
  • Familiarity with various analytical instruments, including FTIR, TGA/DSC, ONH, SEM/EDS, XRD, microscopes, and XRF
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications and drawings
  • Effective documentation and reporting skills using Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work independently and resolve complex problems
  • Effective communication skills with customers and colleagues
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and experience working with hazardous chemicals, solvents, acids, and bases
