Distribution Engineer
Talascend is currently seeking a Distribution Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Overview
As a distribution engineer, you will be involved in electric utility design engineering, developing work packages, performing engineering calculations, and supporting construction activities to ensure high-quality project delivery. The role offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities for professional growth and development.
Responsibilities
- Independently develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems for electric utility customers.
- Review work provided by the client and assess requirements of scopes.
- Perform engineering calculations such as structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, conductor sags and tensions, voltage drop, and flicker.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including post-construction reviews to ensure standards are met.
- Conduct root cause analysis of outages and mitigation using engineering principles and design.
- Coordinate conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements.
- Assess and develop large design packages for complex cable and conduit projects in dense urban environments.
- Develop work permits, easements, and ROW applications.
- Perform site visits to gather field data for developing work packages.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience working directly with an electric utility or electric utility consulting company in electric distribution design engineering.
- Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, Spida-Calc, O-Calc or similar.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Ability to utilize a personal vehicle for customer-related travel.
- Willingness to perform both field and office work, with the ability to work outdoors occasionally.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with NESC standards, ESRI, AutoCAD, and MicroStation.
- Knowledge of GIS, structural analysis, guying calculations, cable pulling calculations, and coordination of protective devices.
- Experience with work management and job estimating software.
- Familiarity with electric demand and fault current calculations.
The shift for this position is standard business hours, and the job is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
