Talascend is currently seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity with our client in Memphis, Tennessee.

Overview

The assistant chief engineer will have a strong focus on supervising, leading, and supporting the operation, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment on all HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other building systems. Individuals are expected to be multi-skilled in all areas (electrical, HVAC, piping/plumbing) to successfully complete daily and weekly work assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Follow safety policies and procedures, maintain strict attention to detail when working on job sites.
  • Perform ongoing preventive and repair work orders on facility mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other installed systems, equipment, and components.
  • Utilize CMMS work order system to manage the timely completion of all preventative and corrective maintenance assignments.
  • Provide support for operations and engineering leadership and team members to ensure work orders and preventive maintenance tasks are completed in compliance with service level agreements and site/client-specific key performance indicators.
  • Lead and share knowledge of HVAC, electric, plumbing, and other skills with team members to grow their skills.
  • Analyze the operation of various systems, determine the cause of any problems/malfunctions, and take corrective action as required.
  • Monitor BAS systems, respond to alarms, and diagnose resolution.
  • Diagnose, inspect, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, chillers, and water cooling towers.
  • Diagnose, inspect, repair, and maintain plumbing components including restroom fixtures, flush valves, water fountains, sinks, drains, water heaters, piping, sump pumps, etc.
  • Diagnose, inspect, repair, and maintain electrical components including lamps, ballasts, fixtures, motors, and wiring components.
  • Inspect damaged surfaces (e.g., plaster, drywall, water-damaged areas, ceiling and wall cracks) for repairs.
  • Complete special tasks such as painting, pressure washing, tenant services requests, special cleaning, and general maintenance as assigned.
  • Perform facility rounds and due diligence efforts, report on conditions impacting tenant occupancy and operations, and enter work orders for resolution.
  • Participate in the maintenance and repair of building components and equipment, providing excellent customer service to tenants and agencies.
  • Identify and propose methods to eliminate safety hazards.
  • Support after-hours building activities as required.
  • Keep records of building rounds, refrigerant logs, engineering data sheets, and develop JSAs and OSHA compliance documentation.
  • Work independently, assist team with daily assignments, and promote professionalism in manner and appearance.
  • Support the culture of self-performing work in-house and maintain a clean and safe environment with adequate tools, supplies, and PPE.
  • Collaborate with the chief engineer to identify and enter cost savings opportunities.
  • Complete all required safety training on schedule and perform any other tasks as assigned by leadership.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, technical training, or degree.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
  • Universal EPA / CFC license.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of technical experience in all aspects of building engineering with a strong background in packaged HVAC, plumbing, electrical, production equipment repair, general building repair, and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of trades school or documented apprenticeship in electrical systems, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, or other craft skills (preferred).
