Talascend is currently seeking a Laboratory Technician for a contract opportunity with our client in South Bend, Indiana.

Overview

This role involves working in a laboratory environment to support the design, development, and certification of testing procedures and standards for complex products, with a focus on materials characterization and process management.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic machining, grinding, and sample preparation of materials testing sections
  • Work with composite materials in a laboratory and machining environment
  • Utilize standard materials characterization techniques, including optical microscopy
  • Participate in processes related to fiber preforms, carbonization, heat treatment, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and related procedures
  • Manage preventative maintenance and gage calibration in laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
  • Assist in developing and executing materials characterization investigations and projects
  • Analyze data using statistical tools such as MINITAB and generate reports
  • Follow work instructions and operating procedures diligently
  • Read and interpret engineering specifications and drawings
  • Lifting of light loads as necessary

Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • At least 3 years of laboratory experience
  • Experienced in materials characterization techniques, including optical microscopy of various platforms
  • Knowledge of composite materials, machining, and lab process environments
  • Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and statistical tools like MINITAB
  • Ability to plan, conduct investigations, and manage multiple complex tasks
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to resolve conflicts tactfully and influence others positively
  • Self-motivated with a proactive work ethic and ability to operate independently
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills in complex situations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field
  • Experience with optical microscopy of NW3 First Cycle Carbon, CTOL, STOVL, 767, and 777 platforms
  • Familiarity with statistical data analysis tools such as MINITAB
